XIX. 29. Ta lyrus'*, <strong>the</strong> well known royal city of<br />

Phoenicia, is frequently mentioned in <strong>the</strong> <strong>inscriptions</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

form (I r, mat**) Sur-ru, 8ur-ri. We find it in <strong>the</strong> i69<br />

monolith-inscription of Asurnasirhabal col. III. 86 along<br />

with Sidon <strong>and</strong> Byblos ; likewise in <strong>the</strong> inscription of king<br />

Rammannir^r I Rawl. 35 line 22, in those of Sargon e. g.<br />

cylinder-inscription I Rawl. 36 line 21 as well as those<br />

of Asarhaddon <strong>and</strong> Asurbanipal (see my essay Zur Kritik<br />

der Inschriften Tigl.-Pil.'s II &c. p. 33). We ga<strong>the</strong>r from<br />

<strong>the</strong> passage in <strong>the</strong> monolith-inscription that Tyre, as well as<br />

Sidon, was tributary to Assyria as early as <strong>the</strong> first half of<br />

<strong>the</strong> 9*'' century. <strong>The</strong> passage in <strong>the</strong> inscription of Sargon<br />

runs as follows : 1 i - ' tam-ha-ri, sa i-na kabal ti-<br />

^m-tiv mS,t la-av-na-ai sa-an-da-nis ki-ma nu-<br />

u-ni i-ba-ru-u-ma u-sap-si-hu mat Ku-i u ir<br />

Sur-ri i. e. "(Sargon) courageously (rh) to <strong>the</strong> combat,<br />

who in <strong>the</strong> midst of <strong>the</strong> sea draws forth <strong>the</strong> lonians like<br />

s<strong>and</strong>anis fishes, <strong>and</strong> rescued <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> Kul, as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

city Tyre, from <strong>the</strong>ir oppression" (Keilinsch. u. Gesch.<br />

p. 238, comp. with Delitzsch Parad. p. 248).*** From<br />
