A Spanish family history
My family is a very fun one. It’s the kind of family that makes me so
proud to be a part of. My whole family is Hispanic. We are from the
Dominican Republic and from Puerto Rico as well. A few of my
ancestors came from Spain. I am proud to be a Latin American. One
interesting fact is that two of my uncles have been to war. I love
spending time with my family.
My grandparents immigrated to America from both Puerto Rico and the
Dominican Republic. My grandmother is from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico
and my grandfather is from Santure, Puerto Rico. My father’s side of the
family is from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
My grandmother on my father’s side came here when she was nineteen
to start a better life, as well as my grandfather (on my mother’s side)
who came here when he was five years old. My mother’s mother came
here when she was fifteen to live with her two older sisters. If it weren’t
for my grandparents immigrating to New York City, I would have
probably have been born somewhere else such as Puerto Rico or the
Dominican Republic.
Generally, my grandparents are pretty amazing. It’s always fun hanging
out with my grandparents considering the fact that they’re not the boring,
average grandparents who do nothing but bake cookies every night, knit
sweaters every day and fall asleep on the couch every other five hours.
My father’s mother loves watching soap operas and she never misses an
episode any night. Sometimes when I go over to her house I get caught
up in the show and when somebody gets in an accident or gets murdered
I start crying. My other grandmother is the slick type. She’s cool and she
keeps up with things all the time, like nothing can pass her by; except for
all the surprise parties our family throws her. Her birthday is on
Valentine’s Day. My grandfather, Felix, is drop dead hilarious and
warm. He had these silly nicknames for people and for me such as
Buddy and Fuimpo. I love visiting him.
Besides the organized, simple version of my family I cannot forget my
Aunt Denise. I consider her the “main character” in my family. When
she was little she was a well-feared bully and a disruptive student. She
pushed chairs out of the teacher’s way making them fall to the floor, she
interrupted the class and she never did any work. She constantly got
suspended from school. She may not be a perfect example of a role
model or anything, but she still is funny and she still is smart.
