The Syrian family The Syrian family consists of a mother and father and their four children, aged 7 to 20. They live in a four-room flat. There is a bedroom for the parents, a bedroom for the daughters, a bedroom for the sons, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet. The balcony if full of green plants. There is a selection of wooden furniture and kitchen appliances which include a washing machine, a fridge, a stove, a television and a tape recorder. There is a bookcase and a number of books in most living rooms. Most of the families either have a computer or try to purchase one. Syrian parents believe that the keys to enter the global village are computing skills and English. So, nowadays, most of the children follow courses to master these skills in the summer vacations. Mothers are housewives, but almost half of the Syrian women are employed. They are teachers, doctors, dentists, engineers, lawyers and members of the Syrian Parliaments. Syrian women are good, some are absolutely marvellous, at fulfilling both jobs. Usually grandmothers help in looking after grandchildren. Grandparents are the essential part of every family activity. Actually, grandmothers have a good rapport with grandchildren. Women play a more traditional and vital role of mother and homemaker, though many have jobs. Fathers spend most of the day at work and make most of the decisions. In recent years fathers have become more involved in childcare, though mothers are still mainly responsible. Family members meet at dinner which is served at 4 o'clock. Syrian mothers are good cooks so they enjoy cooking and watching the family having their meals, especially at weekends. Children set the table, do the washing up, help doing the housework, shop for the groceries and bring the wastes out every evening. Day to day, family life begins with getting the children up and ready for school. There is a rush for everyone to use the bathroom, get dressed, find clean socks, eat breakfast and catch the bus. In the meantime, the parents have to get ready for work themselves. Although early mornings are a scramble for many families, lucky couples drink the nice Syrian coffee peacefully. Syrian family ties are strong. Parents put the children’s needs and interests first. They are very child-centred. The Syrian children have to fit in with the lives of their parents. When we say “family” we mean 260
aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents as well as more distant relatives. Family loyalty is highly appreciated, and many people feel they have a duty to care for family members when they need it. Children leave home when they get married to establish their own nuclear families. Elderly people live in their own homes easily and peacefully as every one looks after them.
