Hurricane Katrina The devastation caused by hurricane Katrina should make us think about whether Karachi could suffer the same fate as New Orleans. As in that beleaguered city, the wetlands around Karachi (the mangrove swamps) have been destroyed to make way for industrial estates and residential colonies. The seashore has been made to recede by reclamation. Even now, artificial reclamation is being carried out on Clifton Beach to satisfy the building mafia's lust for shopping malls and plots. So we are practically in the same situation as New Orleans was before being struck by Nature's wrath. Given that every now and then, Karachi is threatened with cyclones and storms, it's only a matter of time before disaster strikes. And we must not forget that parts of Karachi are below sea level. Is anyone in Islamabad listening? Many painful stories came to the fore in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The ethical and moral values of the superpower country have been unveiled. The stories of racism arising from prejudice of custodians of law was shocking. Carolina is comprised mostly of coloured people but the aid was distributed amongst a handful of white people leaving the rest to face misery. It reminded the world of the invasion of Iraq, where the US forces entered the city after looting. Looters roamed the streets of Carolina while the police watched as a silent spectator. It is an eye-opener for the world that not many days ago U.S.A. was criticizing the human rights violations in China but the shoe was very much on the other foot. All is not hunky dory in the U.S.A. Let us all give a moment of empathy for one of the most tragic civic disasters of this decade. We all feel for the loss of life of innocent people and urge the U.S. Government to dig deep into its system and negate such elements that have ridiculed human values and inspired the culture of hatred by being racist.
