Julius Nyerere<br />

Julius Nyerere was born in 1922 in a small village called Butiama in<br />

North West of Tanzania. He was the son of a chief <strong>and</strong> grew up just like<br />

any other boy of his age. He went to Tabora Secondary School, where he<br />

studied very hard <strong>and</strong> was able to become accepted in the Makerere<br />

College of Ug<strong>and</strong>a. Upon finishing his studies he became a teacher <strong>and</strong><br />

later received a degree in 1952 from Edinburgh University in Scotl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Julius Nyerere helped to organise the party known as Tanganyika<br />

African National Union (TANU). Tanganyika became independent from<br />

the British in 1961. Julius Nyerere was elected as the first Prime<br />

Minister. In 1962, Tanganyika became a republic <strong>and</strong> Julius Nyerere<br />

became its first president. In 1964, Tanganyika <strong>and</strong> Zanzibar united to<br />

join Tanzania. Julius Nyerere ruled the country until 1985, when he gave<br />

another person the chance to rule the country.<br />

On 14 th October 1999 Julius Nyerere died <strong>and</strong> he was mourned by Africa<br />

<strong>and</strong> the rest of the world.<br />

Julius Nyerere will forever be remembered as a great leader <strong>and</strong> a true<br />

son of Africa.<br />
