Julius Nyerere
Julius Nyerere was born in 1922 in a small village called Butiama in
North West of Tanzania. He was the son of a chief and grew up just like
any other boy of his age. He went to Tabora Secondary School, where he
studied very hard and was able to become accepted in the Makerere
College of Uganda. Upon finishing his studies he became a teacher and
later received a degree in 1952 from Edinburgh University in Scotland.
Julius Nyerere helped to organise the party known as Tanganyika
African National Union (TANU). Tanganyika became independent from
the British in 1961. Julius Nyerere was elected as the first Prime
Minister. In 1962, Tanganyika became a republic and Julius Nyerere
became its first president. In 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to
join Tanzania. Julius Nyerere ruled the country until 1985, when he gave
another person the chance to rule the country.
On 14 th October 1999 Julius Nyerere died and he was mourned by Africa
and the rest of the world.
Julius Nyerere will forever be remembered as a great leader and a true
son of Africa.
