GENERAL INFORMATION STATE AUTHORITY ECONOMY CULTURE SPORTS ADDRESSES CROATIAN SPECIALTIES The Episcopal Complex of Euphrasius’ Basilica A complex of sacred buildings dating to the 6th century, built during the time of Bishop Euphrasius, lies at the northeast corner of the urban-historical core of the city of PoreË. Dominating the complex are the three-nave basilica, the narthex, the atrium, the octagonal baptistery and the bishop’s palace, to which was added the vicarage in the 15th century, a bell-tower in the 16th century and two chapels in the 17th and 19th centuries. The apse of the Basilica is ornately decorated with figural mosaics, which, along with the mosaics in San Vitale in Ravenna, are among the most remarkable examples of mosaic art in Europe. Historical Core of Trogir Trogir was founded by Greek colonists from the Island of Vis in the 3rd century BC. On this antique matrix lies the historical core of Trogir, which is the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex, not only in the Adriatic, but in all of Eastern Europe. Trogir’s medieval core, surrounded by walls, is composed of a preserved castle and tower and a series of homes and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The grandest building of Trogir is the Cathedral. The main West Portal, the most siginificant work of Romanesque-Gothic style in the country, is the masterpiece of Radovan. Cathedral in ©ibenik The cathedral located in ©ibenik, St. Jacob’s Cathedral, is a three-aisled basilica with three apses and a cupola (interior height 32 m). The construction of the cathedral was begun in the Venetian Gothic style, but was completed in the Tuscan Renaissance style. More than 15 decades elapsed between the time the decision was made to commence construction, in 1402, and its consecration in 1555. Construction began in 1431 on the site of an earlier, smaller cathedral that had been destroyed, and material from that smaller edifice was used in the construction of the cathedral. The stone for its building was brought from the islands of KorËula, Susak, BraË, Rab and Krk. During the first phase, construction works were carried out by Italian masters Francesco di Giacomo, Lorenzzo Pincino and Pier Paolo Bussato, together with domestic master stonemasons Andrija BudËiÊ 139

Under his guidance, the church was built to the height of side aisles as well as the sanctuary, the apse containing a frieze of 74 heads (thought to be portraits of eminent residents of ©ibenik) and sacristy with an open area at ground level. Nikola Firentinac was the next person to continue the work (completion of side aisles, cupolas, and the roof project - a stone vault). After the death of Nikola Firentinac in 1505, the construction of the cathedral was finally completed by Bartolomeo and Giacomo da Mestre.
