and equipment, repair work is also done. Construction, too, is a significant industry in Split-Dalmatia County,
as are fishing and fish packing. There are 285,340 ha of farmland, most of which is used for the cultivation of
grapes and olives.
Split - county seat
Split is the largest coastal city and the second largest in Croatia. Split is home to the palace of the Roman
Emperor Diocletian. The city grew inside and around the palace, under Marjan Hill. There are numerous cultural
monuments in Split, among them the Museum of Croatian Archeological Monuments and other archives.
THE COUNTY OF ©IBENIK-KNIN ©ibenik-Knin County is located along the central Croatian coastline
in an area of 2,939 km2 and has a population of 112,891 in 5 towns and 12 municipalities. The county seat is
©ibenik. The coastline forms many coves and harbors, and there are 240 islands and islets, among which the
Kornati Archipelago stands out. The Krka and »ikola river canyons, ©ibenik Canal and Prokljansko Lake split the
county into two parts. The Krka is an important source of water and hydroelectric power, in addition to being
a tourist attraction. This contributes to making ©ibenik-Knin County a significant tourist center, with 55,000
tourist beds and nine marinas with around 4000 berths. Agriculture offers possibilities such as the cultivation
of fruits and vegetables, livestock breeding, poultry farming and dairy farming. Around Drniπ, there are vast
reserves of bauxite, quartzite and ornamental rocks used in construction.
©ibenik - county seat
©ibenik is located on the Adriatic coast, at the mouth of the Krka River. It was mentioned for the first time
in 1066 in a charter by King Petar Kreπimir IV, explaining why this city is often called Kreπimir’s City. The city
was built over a thousand years ago by Croatian settlers, making the oldest native Croatian city on the Adriatic
coast. ©ibenik is surrounded by four fortresses: St. Ana, St. Ivan and ©ubiËevac to the east, and St. Nikola to
the west. ©ibenik is home to the famous cathedral built by Juraj Dalmatinac.
