Virovitica - County Seat
Virovitica is located to the east of Zagreb. Its name goes back to 1578, as VerevÊe or Verevca, though it was
also mentioned as Wereucha, as far back as 1234 when Duke Koloman of Slavonia, brother of King Bela IV,
issued a charter granting it the status of a free market town. Virovitica is located in a valley at the foot of
Mount Bilogora, near the Drava River and the Hungarian border. Since 1874, it has been linked by railroad with
Budapest - since 1912 to Zagreb, Bjelovar and Osijek.
THE COUNTY OF ZADAR Zadar County covers an area of 3643 km2 and includes the central Croatian
coastline and islands. In six cities and 26 municipalities, it contains a population of 162,045. Favorable climate
and geography are conducive to the development of tourism. The most important economic sectors are
the machine building, food, chemical and textile industries.
Fertile land allows the development of farming. The fishing industry of the County of Zadar accounts for over
fifty percent of the total saltwater fish caught in Croatia. Zadar has a free zone, in which foreign partners can
invest in industry, finance and other business interests.
Zadar - county seat
Zadar, like many other Croatian cities, has its roots in Roman times, when it was known as Jadera. Numerous
structures remain as witness to years of history. There are many historical archives in Zadar as well as a university.
Near Zadar is the historically important town of Nin, former residence of Croatian kings and the famous
Nin diocese.
