Croatian Emigrants
Individual and group emigration of
Croats intensified in the late 15 th century
and were provoked by the Turkish invasions.
From the 1830s, the first mass
emigrations to the countries of the New
World occurred, which mainly followed
the European migration flows of the time.
The main cause for the emigration of
Croats was economic. Politics as a reason
for emigrating had an indirect effect,
being the cause of economic underdevelopment
which led to emigration. The
most striking example of this was the socalled
“Wine Clause” stipulated in the
1891 trade agreement between the
Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy, which
was particularly unfavorable to Dalmatian
viticulture. The Wine Clause allowed the
import of cheap Italian wines under very
favorable conditions. The Dalmatian wine
industry was heavily affected by this resolution
by the Viennese authorities,
which reduced its market in its own
country. Under the agreement, the clause
was valid for 10 years and was not renewed
afterwards.

Political conditions as the main motive for emigration became
more significant at the end and immediately after World SPORTS
War II,
when several tens of thousands of people emigrated fearing retaliation,
and again after the Yugoslav authorities suppressed the
democratic movement in 1971.
The emigrants are mostly males from rural ADDRESSES
areas, of younger age
and without professional qualifications. In general, they perform
the hardest and the most dangerous physical labor in the country
that they move to, i.e. the jobs that the natives tend to avoid. So-
