Poæega - county seat
Poæega is first mentioned as a county seat in 1227, when it was an important fortress. In 1765, it received
the privileged status of a free royal borough and it was already a significant cultural and educational center.
At that time, the Academia Posegana existed, teaching philosophy and theology. Poæega was therefore known
as the “Slavonian Athens.” Its Baroque town center and triangular main square with the statue of the Holy
Trinity make Poæega unique.
THE COUNTY OF PRIMORJE-GORSKI KOTAR The County of Primorje-Gorski kotar is located on the
Adriatic coast, southeast of Istria and covers 3,582 km2 . It consists of three separate regions: Primorje (coastline),
Gorski Kotar and the Kvarner Bay islands. There are 14 towns and 21 municipalities inhabited by a popula-
crossroads make Rijeka the port number one in the Republic of Croatia. That is why this county, more specifically
Rijeka, has developed into the most important maritime center in Croatia, with a transportation, tourism and
shipbuilding industry on which the Republic of Croatia relies. Gorski Kotar, meanwhile, has traditionally been a
strong logging and wood processing region. Also prominent in the county are oil, petrochemicals and agriculture.
Rijeka - county seat
Rijeka is the largest city on the northern coast. It lies at the mouth of the RjeËina River. At the location of
today’s city, there used to be an Illyrian settlement. Later, the Tarsatica fortress was constructed on that site.
When the Croats arrived in the region, they built a new Croatian town.
THE COUNTY OF SISAK-MOSLAVINA Sisak-Moslavina County is in central Croatia, southeast of
Zagreb. It extends over an area of 4,467 km 2 , supporting a population of 185,387. The county seat is Sisak.
