<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

October lo, 1923, of the sayings and doings of his<br />

friend Richard <strong>Loeb</strong>. Note the close observation<br />

of the fact that <strong>Loeb</strong> made a mistake as to who was<br />

the founder of Stoicism and that that constitutes to<br />

<strong>Leopold</strong> a greater crime even than murder.<br />

Also, on page 74:<br />

Throughout, the intelligence remains intact; percep-<br />

tion is clear and there is no disorientation in the nar-<br />

rower sense of this term. Memory is good, in spite of<br />

the falsifications in meaning and context that have been<br />

mentioned. <strong>The</strong> man remains in contact with reality,<br />

active, alert and interested and there is no tendency to<br />

deterioration or dementia. Hallucinations are unusual,<br />

though they may occur during periods of marked excite-<br />

ment.<br />

Dr. Krohn testified that he based his judgment<br />

as to the absence of mental disease of <strong>Leopold</strong>, upon<br />

his memory, his logical processes, and his orienta-<br />

tion, and his senses: but these are all shown by his<br />

own book to be no evidence that a mental disease<br />

did not exist, but are entirely compatible with the<br />

existence of a paranoid psychosis.<br />

Now, let us see what they have to say about<br />

<strong>Loeb</strong>.<br />

On page 53, in discussing schizophrenic psychosis,<br />

or dementia praecox, appears this statement:<br />

Schizophrenia, literally translated, means splitting of<br />

the mind. It is not possible to look inside of the mind;<br />

hence, conclusions concerning its operation are based on<br />

observation of what the person says and does, these<br />
