<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

before any designing person could have had the<br />

slightest opportunity of talking with him. As to<br />

the delusions of <strong>Leopold</strong> as a suf)erman, and of<br />

Dickie <strong>Loeb</strong> as a superman, we get evidence that<br />

dates back long prior to the commission of the<br />

crime.<br />

Your Honor will remember, if it is necessary to<br />

recall it, that when the argument occurred in the<br />

office of the State's Attorney on that notable Sunday<br />

of June 1, 1924, an argument between Dick <strong>Loeb</strong><br />

and Babe <strong>Leopold</strong> — that is what the State's At-<br />

torney was calling them — in which <strong>Leopold</strong> tried<br />

to convince the State's Attorney that it was <strong>Loeb</strong><br />

who struck the blows with the chisel and sat in the<br />

rear seat of the car, in order to prove it, he called<br />

attention to the fact that Richard <strong>Loeb</strong> was reading<br />

detective stories, playing detective, and had no-<br />

tions of being a criminal, a Master Criminal and<br />

so forth.<br />

Your Honor will remember the letter dated<br />

October 9 from <strong>Leopold</strong> to <strong>Loeb</strong>. On the next day,<br />

after receiving a reply to this letter, <strong>Leopold</strong> again<br />

wrote to <strong>Loeb</strong> as follows:<br />

Dear Dick: I want to thank you first of all for your<br />

kindness in granting my request of yesterday. I was<br />

highly gratified to hear from you for two reasons, the<br />

first sentimental and the second practical. <strong>The</strong> first<br />
