Again, on page loo: " Considerable trouble was<br />

experienced in perfecting a plan whereby they could<br />

secure " — what? <strong>The</strong> thrill? No — " the money,<br />

without exposing themselves to too much danger of<br />

being apprehended." And again, on page loo:<br />

" <strong>The</strong>y wanted to divide the $10,000 ransom money<br />

equally."<br />

No emotion in the superman <strong>Leopold</strong>? No, he<br />

killed all his emotions before he came into court<br />

on the advice of counsel and the advice of doctors.<br />

But on page 102 :<br />

*' It was necessary to hit the vic-<br />

tim several times over the head and he bled some.<br />

This upset the patient a great deal. He said to his<br />

companion, ' My<br />

God, this is awful.' He experi-<br />

enced a sinking feehng in the pit of his stomach.<br />

His hands trembled, he lost some of his self-control.<br />

His companion, however, laughed and joked and<br />

helped the patient to get back his self-control."<br />

When they got to the culvert they found the boy<br />

had already died and they could not carry out their<br />

original scheme of strangling him with a rope.<br />

Again, on page 108: "Asked if he would commit<br />

another such a crime if he were certain that he<br />

could escape detection, he replied, ' I would not<br />

commit another such a crime because I realize that<br />

no one can ever be sure of escaping detection.' "<br />
