<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

<strong>The</strong> lawyer was out of the city, the lady had her<br />

glasses on, and then Nathan <strong>Leopold</strong>, Jr., was called<br />

in and he told the story previously agreed upon by<br />

him and <strong>Loeb</strong>.<br />

" Nathan, have you your glasses at home?<br />

asked the State's Attorney. " Yes."<br />

" Do those glasses resemble yours? " And <strong>Leopold</strong><br />

takes the glasses and examines them and makes<br />

the statement, your Honor: " If I were not sure my<br />

glasses were at home, I would say these are mine."<br />

<strong>The</strong> State's Attorney requested him to visit his<br />

home, accompanied by the police officers, and to find<br />

his glasses. When he arrived at his home he looked<br />

and looked and looked and went to a drawer where<br />

he picked out the <strong>case</strong> that he had received when<br />

he purchased the glasses, and he handed the <strong>case</strong> to<br />

one of the police officers, and said: "This is my<br />

<strong>case</strong>, with the name of Aimer Coe on the face of it."<br />

But he couldn't find his glasses and the police<br />

officers brought Nathan <strong>Leopold</strong> back to the La-<br />

Salle Hotel.<br />

Before <strong>Leopold</strong> had returned to the hotel Richard<br />

<strong>Loeb</strong> had been brought in, and upon being asked to<br />

trace his footsteps — keeping in mind, your Honor,<br />

that the week had elapsed the day before, and that<br />

the alibi that they had framed was not to be on<br />

after a week — <strong>Loeb</strong> lost his memory and could not<br />

say where he was on that particular day.<br />

<strong>The</strong> State's Attorney, leading him step by step,<br />

asked him if it was not a fact that on the 21st he<br />
