<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

Following are extracts from some of their<br />

speeches<br />

All governments are domineering parties. Assassina-<br />

tion will remove the evil from the face of the earth.<br />

For freedom all things are just.<br />

We need no president, no congressmen, no police, no<br />

militia, no judges. <strong>The</strong>y are all leeches sucking the<br />

blood of the poor who have to support them by their<br />

labor.<br />

We are told that we must obtain our means and need<br />

by obeying law and order. Damn law and order. We<br />

have obeyed law and order long enough. <strong>The</strong> time has<br />

come for you men to strangle the law or the law will<br />

strangle you.<br />

That was the philosophy of the anarchists, to<br />

destroy the law. <strong>The</strong> philosophy here is that the<br />

law has no application. <strong>The</strong> anarchists believed in<br />

their doctrine of social revolution, but they were<br />

executed under the laws that they damned, executed<br />

not for their abstract opinions, not for their theory<br />

and philosophy, but because of their murder. Mistaken<br />

men that they were, they had no selfish money<br />

motive for their crime.<br />

Only so recently as People vs. Lloyd et al., 304<br />

Illinois, 2J, the communists also had a philosophy<br />

and a theory of revolutionary socialism. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

aimed to conquer the power of the State. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

were convicted of a conspiracy and their conviction<br />

affirmed in the Supreme Court.<br />

Upon what theory can it be said that the views<br />

of <strong>Leopold</strong>, Jr., his philosophy and his opinions,<br />
