<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

to pick up that coat by the tail, and when he did<br />

the glasses fell out of the pocket. That was the way<br />

it had actually occurred. <strong>Loeb</strong> had so handed the<br />

coat to <strong>Leopold</strong> at the culvert.<br />

<strong>The</strong> defendant <strong>Leopold</strong> was told that an Underwood<br />

typewriter had been recently seen at his home,<br />

and he said, if so it must have belonged to one of<br />

four boys who had been doing some " dope sheeting<br />

" with him. And he named the four boys who<br />

had worked with him on his class work and in<br />

preparing for an examination in school.<br />

Just about that time Goldstein and Milroy of the<br />

Daily News came to the State's Attorney's office<br />

with some copies of work that had been done on this<br />

Underwood portable typewriter.<br />

<strong>The</strong> boys he referred to were sent for, and upon<br />

being questioned in the office, stated that they had<br />

noticed at one time in particular this portable type-<br />

writer in the home of Nathan <strong>Leopold</strong>. One of<br />

them had made some notes on it.<br />

And after talking to the four boys himself, Leo-<br />

pold was asked the question: " Could it be possible<br />

that somebody else whose name you have not men-<br />

tioned owned that typewriter? " His reply was:<br />

" I think it belongs to Leon Mandel." Leon Mandel<br />

was in Europe at that time.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n he was questioned, and by the questions that<br />

were asked of him by the State's Attorney, he was<br />

shown that if the typewriter belonged to Leon Man-<br />

del, it must still be at his home, and that he agreed<br />
