The Loeb-Leopold Case
They called witness after witness to prove some-
thing that did not need to be proved under a plea
of guilty. Then this came, which to me was a
poisoned piece of perjury, with a purpose, and I
cross-examined him:
" Did you make any record? " " Yes, I think I
did."
" Where is it? " " I think I have it."
" Let me see it."
There was not a word or a syllable upon that
paper.
" Did you make any other? " " Yes."
" When did you make it? " " Within two or
three days of the occurrence."
" Let me see that."
He said he would bring it back later.
" Did you make another? " " Yes."
" What was it? " " A complete report to the
chief of police."
" Is it in there? " " I think so."
" Will you bring that? " " Yes."
He brought them both into this court. They con-
tained, all these reports, a complete or almost a
complete copy of everything that happened, but not
one word on this subject. He deliberately said that
he made that record within a few days of the time it
occurred, and that he told the office about it within
a few days of the time it occurred. And then what
did he say? Then he came back in answer to my
cross-examination, and said that he never told
