<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

<strong>The</strong>y called witness after witness to prove some-<br />

thing that did not need to be proved under a plea<br />

of guilty. <strong>The</strong>n this came, which to me was a<br />

poisoned piece of perjury, with a purpose, and I<br />

cross-examined him:<br />

" Did you make any record? " " Yes, I think I<br />

did."<br />

" Where is it? " " I think I have it."<br />

" Let me see it."<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was not a word or a syllable upon that<br />

paper.<br />

" Did you make any other? " " Yes."<br />

" When did you make it? " " Within two or<br />

three days of the occurrence."<br />

" Let me see that."<br />

He said he would bring it back later.<br />

" Did you make another? " " Yes."<br />

" What was it? " " A complete report to the<br />

chief of police."<br />

" Is it in there? " " I think so."<br />

" Will you bring that? " " Yes."<br />

He brought them both into this court. <strong>The</strong>y con-<br />

tained, all these reports, a complete or almost a<br />

complete copy of everything that happened, but not<br />

one word on this subject. He deliberately said that<br />

he made that record within a few days of the time it<br />

occurred, and that he told the office about it within<br />

a few days of the time it occurred. And then what<br />

did he say? <strong>The</strong>n he came back in answer to my<br />

cross-examination, and said that he never told<br />
