next day and washed it, and then poor little Dickie<br />

<strong>Loeb</strong> — I shouldn't call him Dickie, and I shouldn't<br />

call him poor, because that might be playing for<br />

sympathy, and you have no right to ask for sym-<br />

pathy in this world. You should ask for justice,<br />

whatever that may be;<br />

And then in a day or so we find Dick <strong>Loeb</strong> with<br />

his pockets stuffed with newspapers telling of the<br />

Franks tragedy. We find him consulting with his<br />

friends in the club, with the newspaper reporters;<br />

and my experience is that the last person that a<br />

conscious criminal associates with is a reporter. He<br />

even shuns them more than he does a detective, be-<br />

cause they are smarter and less merciful. But he<br />

picks up a reporter, and he tells him he has read a<br />

great many detective stories, and he knows just how<br />

this would happen and that the fellow who tele-<br />

phoned must have been down on 63rd Street, and<br />

the way to find him is to go down on 63rd Street and<br />

visit the drug stores, and he would go with him.<br />

And Dick <strong>Loeb</strong> pilots reporters around the drug<br />

stores where the telephoning was done, and he talks<br />

about it, and he takes the newspapers with him, and<br />

he is having a glorious time.<br />

Talk about scheming. Yes, it is the scheme of<br />

disease; it is the scheme of infancy; it is the scheme<br />

of fools; it is the scheme of irresponsibility from the<br />
