<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

Among others considered at that particular time<br />

was their bosom friend, Richard Rubel; this boy<br />

who, three times a week, would have lunch with both<br />

defendants. And they talked over just what method<br />

they would pursue to dispose of their companion,<br />

and then the thought came to them that if they had<br />

to dispose of Rubel some one might suspect them;<br />

also that Rubel's father was a tightwad, and in<br />

all probability would not come across with the<br />

cash.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir next move, your Honor, was to open a<br />

bank account, and Richard <strong>Loeb</strong> withdrew money<br />

from the bank and turned it over to Nathan <strong>Leopold</strong><br />

so that he might open an account in the Hyde Park<br />

State Bank under the name of Morton D. Ballard.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y next established a residence at the Morrison<br />

Hotel.<br />

<strong>Leopold</strong> then appeared at the Rent-a-Car Com-<br />

pany and made application for a car, stating that he<br />

was a salesman from Peoria, and giving as his resi-<br />

dence the Morrison Hotel, his bank account the<br />

Hyde Park State Bank, and as a city reference<br />

Louis Mason, 1352 Wabash Avenue. Also the tele-<br />

phone number of the latter's store.<br />

Jacobs, the president of the concern, called the<br />

telephone number that was given him by <strong>Leopold</strong>,<br />

who had represented himself as Morton D. Ballard,<br />

<strong>Loeb</strong> was awaiting the telephone call. He answered<br />

the phone, and stated in response to the questions<br />

that were asked by Jacobs, the president, that his<br />
