And after going, your Honor, to the various places<br />

until they reached this particular drug store at<br />

1465 East 63rd Street, upon making inquiry in<br />

there, they were informed that on that day of May<br />

22 nd two telephone calls had come to that drug store<br />

inquiring for Jacob Franks, and after sending that<br />

information back to their papers, they started over<br />

to the vicinity of the Franks home.<br />

And one of the newspaper boys turned to <strong>Loeb</strong> and<br />

asked <strong>Loeb</strong> if he knew Bobby Franks. He said he<br />

did, that Bobby Franks used to play tennis in his<br />

yard, and said, in reply to a question as to what<br />

kind of a fellow he was, that if one was going to pick<br />

out a boy to kidnap or murder he was just the kind<br />

of a little cocky he would pick.<br />

Just imagine that, your Honor, coming from the<br />

murderer two days after the boy had been murdered.<br />

Does not that show an abandoned and malignant<br />

heart? <strong>The</strong>n they decided that they had better dis-<br />

pose of the little class pin, and belt, and shoes of<br />

Bobby, so they drove out into Indiana, and hid them<br />

out there. <strong>The</strong>n they returned.<br />

And while he was talking to Captain Wolff, in<br />

answer to the question whether there were any mem-<br />

bers of his class or any of his friends who wore<br />

glasses, <strong>Leopold</strong> named his companion George<br />

Lewis. And that night, fearing that by some chance<br />

they might pick him out, he stole the typewriter,<br />

this Underwood portable typewriter, from his house<br />

unnoticed, and placed it in the back of his machine,<br />
