<strong>The</strong> <strong>Loeb</strong>-<strong>Leopold</strong> Case<br />

had lunch with <strong>Leopold</strong> at Marshall Field's grill.<br />

<strong>Loeb</strong> then knew that <strong>Leopold</strong> had told the ahbi<br />

story, and he immediately proceeded to tell his story,<br />

the same as <strong>Leopold</strong>, and convincing every one in<br />

that room, your Honor, that he was telling the ab-<br />

solute truth.<br />

And after he had gone over his story, which<br />

varied in no respect after he started to tell it, the<br />

State's Attorney asked him what he thought about<br />

the glasses, and <strong>Loeb</strong> said: "Why every one says<br />

that if you find the owner of the glasses you have<br />

found the man who murdered Bobbie Franks."<br />

<strong>The</strong> State's Attorney then said to him: " Richard,<br />

what would you say if I told you that your pal,<br />

Nathan <strong>Leopold</strong>, is the owner of the glasses? "<br />

Why, your Honor, he almost jumped out of his<br />

seat, and gasped: " My God! Why, that can't be<br />

true, and if it is true it could not be Nathan that<br />

had anything to do with this crime. Why, I was<br />

with him on that day in question." And the State's<br />

Attorney said to him: " Yes, Richard, I know you<br />

were."<br />

He was taken from the room, and <strong>Leopold</strong> was<br />

brought back, and upon being asked if he had found<br />

his glasses he stated that he had not, and that these<br />

glasses must be his.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n he was asked to explain how it was possible<br />

for his glasses to be approximately ten or twelve<br />

feet from the culvert where this boy was buried, and<br />

he had the most wonderful explanation. " Why,"<br />
