He told him there would be a Yellow Cab at his<br />

door, and for him to get into the cab and go to<br />

the place named and there await a call.<br />

But Jacob Franks, five minutes prior to that time,<br />

your Honor, had learned his boy was murdered.<br />

He begged for time; he asked the supposed<br />

George Johnson on the other end of the line for a<br />

half hour longer. But <strong>Leopold</strong> insisted that he go<br />

at once.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y next called a Yellow Cab, and the order<br />

went to the Yellow Cab Company to send a cab to<br />

5052 Ellis Avenue, the home of Jacob Franks, and<br />

that there was a load there waiting for them, and<br />

the cab was sent at once.<br />

After having placed this letter in the box that is<br />

used for blank telegrams, <strong>Loeb</strong> left the Pullman car,<br />

and when he got out on the street he tore up his<br />

pullman ticket and his railroad ticket which he<br />

had purchased and then he and <strong>Leopold</strong> started<br />

south. <strong>The</strong>y called the drug store that they had<br />

directed Jacob Franks to go to but Franks was not<br />

there.<br />

After trying to reach Jacob Franks twice in this<br />

drug store, they noticed a newspaper stand, and on<br />

that stand in large headlines appeared the statement<br />

that the boy's body had been found.<br />

<strong>Leopold</strong> still insisted upon getting the ten thou-<br />

sand dollars; wanted to go on. But <strong>Loeb</strong>, cool of<br />

judgment, insisted that if they continued to try and<br />
