RESUMEN NUEVAS FUENTES DOCUMENTALES SOBRE EL ASEDIO DE BALER (1898-1899): EL RELATO DE RAMÓN BUADES TORMO Juan Antonio MARTÍN RUIZ 1 Damos a conocer un relato inédito sobre el célebre asedio de Baler (1898-1899), realizado por el soldado Ramón Buades Tormo tras el largo sitio al que fue sometido dicho destacamento, pues debió ser redactado en 1899, lo que le convierte en una de las fuentes más antiguas que conocemos hasta el momento. Al mismo tiempo comparamos dicho texto con los conocidos hasta el momento, como serían los de Saturnino Martín Cerezo y Fray Félix Minaya y Rojo, a fin de establecer las similitudes y diferencias que puedan existir entre ellos. ABSTRACT We reveal an unpublished account about the famous siege of Baler (1898-1899), narrated by the soldier Ramon Buades Tormo after the long siege which the above mentioned site was laid to. It must have been written in 1899, which turns it into one of the oldest sources known up to now. At the same time we compare the text with the others known so far, such as 1 Arqueólogo. Introducción ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ Hace ya más de un siglo que un reducido destacamento llevó a cabo una tenaz resistencia en un apartado pueblo llamado Baler, con ocasión de la guerra de independencia de Filipinas y el posterior enfrentamiento con los Estados Unidos durante 1896 a 1898, y que ellos prolongaron un año más. Esta defensa, tan heroica como desesperada, se conserva en nuestra memoria colectiva como Los últimos de Filipinas 2 , concepto derivado de una célebre película que, si bien es correcto a la hora de señalar a los últimos en resistir, no lo es tanto si con ello se hace alusión a aquellos soldados que, en no pocas ocasiones, hubieron de esperar algunos años más para ser repatriados. Sin embargo, y a pesar de ser uno de los acontecimientos más célebres que tuvieron lugar durante la guerra de independencia de Filipinas, cabe señalar la gran escasez que existe de fuentes documentales que nos informen sobre lo que sucedió durante el célebre sitio de Baler, en el que un reducido destacamento de soldados españoles soportó, como decimos, a lo largo de 337 días un férreo asedio. Así, hasta ahora dichas fuentes se limitaban a dos relatos, como son el de Saturnino Martín Cerezo y el de Fray Féliz Minaya y Rojo, si bien del segundo de ellos tan sólo se ha publicado un extenso resumen, de manera que aún permanece en gran medida desconocido.
