Lesson 1 Safety in the Lab Funciones: Hacer advertencias y prohibiciones. Lenguaje: Students must wear a lab coat. Danger! Vocabulario: chemicals, danger, gas, voltage, substances, water; compressed, deep, fl ammable, fragile, hazardous, high, poisonous Materiales: Cartulinas (un pliego por cada tres alumnos). ¡Comencemos! 50 Escriba en el pizarrón una lista de palabras propias de un laboratorio de ciencias (coat, chemical, fl ammable, fragile, hazardous materials, etc.) y pida que digan cuáles son cognados. Recuérdeles que cognados son aquellas palabras que se escriben de manera semejante y tienen el mismo signifi cado en inglés y en español. Pida a los alumnos que digan otros cognados y escríbalos en el pizarrón. 1 Experience it! a. Pida a los alumnos que vean la ilustración y ayúdelos a contestar las preguntas. b. Ponga el Track 11. Solicite a los alumnos que escuchen el diálogo y marquen con una paloma las señales que corresponden a las advertencias mencionadas. Track 11 Teacher: Now, I’ll show you the science lab. Pida a los alumnos que observen las señales de la ilustración y que encierren en un círculo las que advierten un peligro. b. Indique a los alumnos que observen las señales de nuevo, que decidan cuáles advierten un peligro, cuáles prohíben algo y cuáles señalan una obligación, y que completen la tabla. Cerciórese de que los alumnos comprenden que, en inglés, para expresar una prohibición se emplea la palabra no al principio de la oración (No smoking), para expresar obligación se utiliza la palabra must (You must wear a coat) y para formular advertencias se usan las palabras danger! o careful!, que signifi can “peligro” y “cuidado”, respectivamente. c. Divida la clase en parejas. Pida a los alumnos que comparen sus respuestas. Aclare sus dudas. 3 Try it out! a. Indique a los alumnos que vean las ilustraciones y escriban advertencias para los peligros que muestran. b. Divida la clase en parejas. Pida a los alumnos que lean sus advertencias a su compañero. 4 Use it! a. Divida la clase en grupos. Solicite a los alumnos que hagan signos de advertencia para cinco peligros potenciales en su escuela. b. Solicite a los alumnos que presenten sus señales de advertencia al resto de la clase. Pida que decidan cuáles son las señales más claras. Para concluir… Divida la clase en tríos. Reparta la cartulina. Indique a los alumnos que elaboren un cartel con advertencias para un lugar público muy concurrido. Pida que usen símbolos o dibujos que ayuden a comprender mejor el mensaje y que preparen una breve presentación de su cartel. Luego, pida que pasen al pizarrón a mostrar su trabajo.
