<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal conditions. The same happ<strong>en</strong>s for p<strong>la</strong>nt growth during the first year,<br />

which is more markedly <strong>de</strong>p<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>nt on seed reserves than on the particu<strong>la</strong>r<br />

<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal conditions. On the other hand, <strong>sur</strong>vival and establishm<strong>en</strong>t success<br />

<strong>de</strong>p<strong>en</strong>d, at least partly, on water avai<strong>la</strong>bility. A scarcity of this resource can lead to<br />

strongly limited <strong>sur</strong>vival in some zones. The spatial aggregation patterns for seedling<br />

<strong>sur</strong>vival and establishm<strong>en</strong>t success persist during the dry season and only vanish wh<strong>en</strong><br />

p<strong>la</strong>nt mortality is very high (e.g. un<strong>de</strong>r extrem<strong>el</strong>y dry conditions such as that of<br />

summer in the studied year or in species with a high s<strong>en</strong>sitivity to this limitation).<br />
