number of cases in the <strong>en</strong>try “All species” has be<strong>en</strong> omitted because points exhibited values from 0 to 4<br />

(see Methods). An aggregation in<strong>de</strong>x (I a ) less than 1 corresponds to a regu<strong>la</strong>r pattern and a near‐unity<br />

one to a random pattern. The spatial pattern is aggregated wh<strong>en</strong> I a is significant and greater than unity<br />

(a P < 0.07, * P < 0.05, ** P < 0.01, *** P < 0.001, ns not significant). The dashes in some <strong>en</strong>tries indicate<br />

that spatial aggregation could not be assessed owing to the scarcity of cases in some category.<br />
