<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal constraints (McKay et al., 2005). Many studies focusing on the analysis<br />

of the variability among popu<strong>la</strong>tions, have found significant popu<strong>la</strong>tion‐associated<br />

variations in physiological, structural and growth parameters (Sánchez‐Vi<strong>la</strong>s and<br />

Retuerto, 2007; Vil<strong>la</strong>r‐Salvador et al. 2008; Ramírez‐Vali<strong>en</strong>te et al. 2009).<br />

In the same s<strong>en</strong>se, within‐popu<strong>la</strong>tion variability driv<strong>en</strong> by maternal traits might<br />

p<strong>la</strong>y a key role in the adaptation to local conditions. Seed mass is one of the traits<br />

influ<strong>en</strong>ced by the maternal p<strong>la</strong>nt (Byers et al., 1997; Castro 1999; Merouani et al.,<br />

2001) with a w<strong>el</strong>l‐recognised importance on reg<strong>en</strong>eration, especially on <strong>la</strong>rge‐see<strong>de</strong>d<br />

species growing in unfavourable <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts (Leishman and Westoby, 1994;<br />

Saverimuttu and Westoby, 1996). Seed mass is <strong>de</strong>termined by maternal g<strong>en</strong>otype,<br />

maternal <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>t or both (Schmitt et al., 1992; Ramírez‐Vali<strong>en</strong>te et al., 2009).<br />

P<strong>la</strong>nts from <strong>la</strong>rger seeds could have some advantages, such as higher germination or<br />

emerg<strong>en</strong>ce rates higher biomass or a greater probability of <strong>sur</strong>vival (Gómez, 2004a;<br />

Moles and Westoby, 2004; Quero et al. 2008b). The exist<strong>en</strong>ce of inter‐individual<br />

variation in acorn yi<strong>el</strong>d size has be<strong>en</strong> studied for differ<strong>en</strong>t oak species (Rice et al, 1993;<br />

Gómez, 2004a) and seed mass has shown to be highly corr<strong>el</strong>ated to mother tree.<br />

Therefore, the effect of seed mass can be confoun<strong>de</strong>d with other traits <strong>de</strong>termined by<br />

maternal source wh<strong>en</strong> experim<strong>en</strong>ts are conducted with seeds from differ<strong>en</strong>t p<strong>la</strong>nts<br />

(Castro, 1999).<br />

Maternal source may also <strong>de</strong>termine other traits that <strong>en</strong>hance seedling<br />

establishm<strong>en</strong>t. The within‐popu<strong>la</strong>tion variability in leaf traits is w<strong>el</strong>l‐recognised<br />

(González‐Rodríguez and Oyama, 2005; Ramírez‐Vali<strong>en</strong>te et al., 2009). Rice et al.<br />

(1993) suggested the possibility of g<strong>en</strong>etic variation for p<strong>la</strong>sticity in traits such as the<br />

specific leaf area that can be especially important in heterog<strong>en</strong>eous <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts<br />

such as Mediterranean‐type areas. Seedling growth and other physiological traits<br />

r<strong>el</strong>ated to drought resistance seem as w<strong>el</strong>l to have a heritable compon<strong>en</strong>t (Leiva and<br />

Fernán<strong>de</strong>z‐Alés, 1998; Castro et al., 2008).<br />

The preservation of adaptive g<strong>en</strong>etic variation within and among popu<strong>la</strong>tions<br />

<strong>en</strong><strong>sur</strong>es that evolutionary pot<strong>en</strong>tial is maintained and inbreeding avoi<strong>de</strong>d, <strong>de</strong>termining<br />
