For all four oak species light availability had a negative impact on specific leaf
area. In the case of Q. ilex and Q. pyrenaica it was the only variable retained in the final
model. For Q. suber, an independent effect of mother tree was also detected, while for
Q. faginea the response to light availability depended on the mother tree, as sugested
by a significant interaction term (Table 3).
Appendix S2 and S3 show mean values (± sd) of the different variables
measured in the five mother trees at each species.
