The climate is dry Mediterranean, with a mean annual temperature of 17.6 ºC, an
average rainfall of 609 mm and dry summers. The average temperature and
atmospheric humidity for the period from April to October 2008 were recorded with a
data logger (HOBO Pro Series 8 Temp, RH) located in the area. The average
temperature during the first eight months (February–September 2008) was 23.9 ± 5.1
ºC and accumulated precipitation 604 mm (Fig.1).

Seed collection and seedling assessment
Acorn collection was carried out in autumn 2007. Collection and seed dry mass
estimations are described in general methods section (p. 29). Equation for Q. ilex was
S DM = –0.2878 + 0.5412×A FM (r 2 = 0.95, P < 0.001) and for Q. suber S DM = –0.1167 +
0.6019×A FM (r 2 = 0.98, P < 0.001).
