A Case Study of Integrating ICT Education With<br />

Classroom Instruction<br />

The publication describes a case study of the integration of ICT and visual arts<br />

education. The field study phase of the project was carried out in the school year<br />

2001-2002 in Grade 4 of Lapunmäki School in Konnevesi. The research data were<br />

gathered using several methods and analysed in accordance with Syrjäläinen’s<br />

classification of the stages of qualitative analysis.<br />

The central aim of the project was to find ways of putting communications<br />

technology tools to practical uses and explore meaningful content production.<br />

The technology employed during instruction and the students’ acquisition of user<br />

skills were incorporated into the other teaching contents. The first research task<br />

was to find practices that would make it possible to integrate ICT instruction,<br />

through the use of Peda.net web tools, as a natural aspect of a comprehensiveschool<br />

classroom teacher’s teaching planning and practical activities. The second<br />

research task was to develop integrated ICT education on the basis of student<br />

experiences. The third research task, which the two first tasks were intended to<br />

serve, was to promote student construction of knowledge through integration,<br />

experiential learning, collaborative learning and evaluation.<br />

The research findings suggest that though a meaningful integration of ICT<br />
