Kansas, much of it brought together by Professor Mel vin. The
excessive size to which the bibliography of pamphlets grew, forced
the dropping of this useful supplement. A decent bibliography of
books on the French Revolution would itself extend to excessive size.
The bases for the division of this bibliography into three
parts—anonymous, author, and corporate publications—are indicated, in
the brief note before each part. Only a few additional remarks on
methods followed in constructing the checklist need be made. Except
in the obvious editorial notes, brackets are used, throughout to
enclose matter supplied by the editor. "When the place and date of
publication did not appear on a pamphlet, the editor tried to add
this information, ¥here some doubt remained a question mark was
inserted after the place or date supplied. In some cases knowledge and.
ingenuity were inadequate for even a cautious guess, and one was not
ventured. The original scheme of showing accent marks as they appeared
on the pamphlets could not be followed for capital letters, where the
typescript, from which photographic negatives were made for offset
reproduction, did not clearly show accents on capitals.
The editor has benefitted from the assistance of others in the
tedious tasks involved in preparing this bibliography. He is especially
indebted to two of his former graduate students, Mr. C. Stewart Doty,
presently a candidate for the Ph.D. degree at the Ohio State University,
and Dr. Gerlof D. Homan, now associate professor of history at Central
Oklahoma State College. Mr. Doty assisted in the early stages of
arranging the pamphlets and prepared the original bibliography cards.
Dr. Homan checked, the original typescript with the pamphlets and
prepared the first index cards. Mrs. Jean Runnels produced the final
typescript and Mrs. Brigitte Crist helped in the concluding phases of
arrangement, numbering, and checking. Mr. Robert L. Quinsey, assistant
