Vaccination against Whooping Cough (Pertussis) :
BOOSTRIXTETRA ® or REPEVAX ®
For the newborn’s family circle
Vaccinate adults to protect children
Whooping cough (also called Pertussis) is a very contagious respiratory disease. There is
currently a pertussis outbreak. This disease is especially dangerous for young infants (it is
the first cause of death by bacterial infection for infants under two months).
Infants are infected by one of their parents in 43% of the cases. Adults catch whooping
cough because the vaccine they were given as children is no more effective. Moreover,
whooping cough diagnosis on adults comes often late, as clinical symptoms of the disease at
its early stages are very common. Adults can then infect the newborn that is not yet
protected by the vaccine. (Primary immunization consists in 3 injections, when the infant is 2,
3 and 4 months old. Protection will only be effective after these 3 injections have been
given).
The Vaccination Technical Committee has therefore recommended to vaccinate :
• During pregnancy :
The father during the mother’s pregnancy
The mother, as soon as possible after delivery
• Outside pregnancy : the adults who are prone to become parents during the months
or years to come
The aim is to vaccinate parents in order to protect unimmunized newborn babies, while
they are waiting for vaccination.
Adults should get a vaccination boost of DTP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis) every 10 years
to maintain protection. Yet, if one or several cases of whooping cough appear, the common
10 year period can be shortened to 2. In extension, this period can also be shortened in
case of pregnancy.
Adult vaccination uses a combination vaccine protecting against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio
and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). No Pertussis-only vaccine is available.
The pertussis vaccines available are BOOSTRIXTETRA ® (GlaxoSmithKline) and
REPEVAX ® (Sanofi Pasteur).
Unlike the old vaccines against pertussis (Whooping Cough), Boostrixtetra ® and Repevax ®
are well tolerated.
Mothers can be vaccinated even while breast-feeding.
Don’t forget to check your vaccine coverage and consult your treating physician for further
information and/or get vaccinated if needed.
