Influenza aviaires en CamargueOnline appendixDisease dataWe collected and tested 2 389 fecal samples from 89 freeliving avian species belonging to12 orders. Birds were trapped from September 2005 to July 2006. The presence of avianinfluenza viruses (AIV) was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reactionamplification (RTPCR) targeting the conserved matrix gene segment (Lebarbenchon et al.,2007a,b). Twentysix samples were positive for AIV (i.e. detection of virus in feces), butnone were found positive for a highly pathogenic (HP) AIV virus. Details concerningsamples collection and molecular analysis were previously published by Lebarbenchon et al.(2007a,b). Figure S1 represents the AIV prevalence in wild birds used in this study.Population dynamics of the whole avian communityOrnithological data (Jourdain et al. 2007, Figure S2) provide the minimal population size foreach species for each month. These population sizes were added up to quantify thepopulation dynamics of the whole community. Within our framework, we assumed that therecorded abundance was reached at the end of the month. We assumed that population fluctuations were only due to birth or death. In fact, thedynamic system is not change either if bird leave the community by migration or by death. However, this assumption may introduce some confusion concerning the entry process. If abird is introduced in the community by migration, as Infectious or Recovered, rather than bybirth, i.e. as Susceptible, this could influence the dynamics of the whole community.83
