MARITAL/FAMILY<br />
Record the following information in the domain analysis, if applicable<br />
a. Problems/preoccupations related to the offender’s children, such as child care while incarcerated. (Ensure<br />
that this question is asked of foreign nationals.)<br />
b. Information regarding the offender being a victim of violence, including physical, emotional <strong>and</strong>/or sexual<br />
abuse. Sexual abuse includes incest, sexual abuse within the family, by acquaintances, or friends.<br />
Offenders who have experienced sexual abuse within the family often have lower self-esteem.<br />
Prompt questions for the Marital/Family domain include<br />
- What experiences of violence or abuse can you recall having experienced or witnessed (include<br />
childhood, adolescence, adult, <strong>and</strong> experiences during incarceration)?<br />
- Who/what helped to maintain the violence or abuse you experienced (e.g., did someone say that you<br />
deserved it <strong>and</strong> to not tell anyone or try to leave)?<br />
- Did anyone help you to escape the violence?<br />
- What helped you to survive those experiences?<br />
- What would help you to deal with those experiences now?<br />
If the offender is a parent, suggested prompt questions include:<br />
- How did you learn to be a mother?<br />
- What do you remember learning from your mother or father about this?<br />
- What would your family <strong>and</strong> friends say about you as a parent?<br />
- What would your children say about you as a parent?<br />
- Who is caring for you children while you are incarcerated? Are you happy with the arrangement?<br />
- What contact do you have with your children?<br />
SUBSTANCE ABUSE<br />
Prompt questions for the Substance Abuse domain include:<br />
- How has using drugs or alcohol helped you?<br />
- What problems has it caused you?<br />
- Did you ever notice what helped you to resist using drugs or alcohol?<br />
- Did anyone help you to maintain your use of these substances?<br />
