DeST 32 Doc.No 20100610.SIMEA.MR.03 Versione 1 DeST, or Designer’s Simulation Toolkit, is a tool developed for aiding HVAC engineers to realize “design by analysis, design by simulation”. It can also be used to help architects optimize their thermal performance of fabrics. It is an annual building energy consumption analyze software doing simulation hourly for HVAC designers, applying simulation into different phases of design. DeST is “design by simulation”, which means that DeST is designed to make it possible to apply simulation into different parts of building design and is convenient for a designer to get sufficient aid in the design process. In addition, DeST has incorporated different stages of the building design processes and has five main simulation stages: building thermal process, system scheme analysis, AHU system analysis, duct/pipe networks, and plant analysis. These simulation stages provide accurate results to fulfill the needs for different stages of building system design. The second one is that an advanced multi-zone heat and mass balance methodology based on state space method is applied in building thermal environment simulations with high accuracy. The third one is that DeST has used a three-dimensional dynamic heat transfer methodology for annual simulation which is easy to compute the heat transfer of a ground-coupled envelope quickly and accurately. Dynamic simulation method coupling CFD with hourly building simulation used in DeST is the fourth feature. And the last one is that DeST has used system simulation methodology under uncertain inner heat gains. DeST comprises a number of different modules for handling different functions: Medpha (Meteorological Data Producer for HVAC Analysis) (Hong and Jiang 1993), VentPlus (Module for calculation of natural ventilation), Bshadow (module for external shadowing calculation), Lighting (module for indoor lighting calculation), and CABD (Computer Aided Building Description, provides the user interface for DeST, developed based on AutoCAD). BAS (Building Analysis & Simulation) is the core module for building thermal performance calculation. 1.2.15.1. Validation/Testing DeST has been tested against the IEA Annex 21 subtask C and ASHRAE 140 program contrast tests. Results are available under Testing and Validation on the DeST web site. 1.2.15.2. Expertise Required Engineering background is necessary, and two days of formal training is better. 1.2.15.3. Users DeST has been widely used in China, with some applications in Europe and Japan. More than 4,000 users are now using DeST as a building simulation tool. 1.2.15.4. Audience HVAC and architectural engineers, consulting firms, research universities and research laboratories. 1.2.15.5. Input Weather data, building construction, building materials and envelope components, zoning and system type, operating schedules, HVAC equipment and controls, the set state of every room, building component costs. Data can be input in graphical interfaces.

Strengths Accurate, detailed, overall simulation capabilities through scientific calculation method, DeST is a slave of the designer, it can take the simply repeated work and complicated calculation from people, and give more space to designers for exerting their talent in every stages of the design process. 1.2.15.10. Weaknesses The speed of exporting reports is a little slow.
