1.3.5. HOMER
93
Doc.No 20100610.SIMEA.MR.03
Versione 1
Evaluates design options for both off-grid and gridconnected
power systems for remote, stand-alone, and
distributed generation (DG) applications. HOMER's
optimization and sensitivity analysis algorithms allow
you to evaluate the economic and technical feasibility of
a large number of technology options and to account for variation in technology costs and energy resource
availability. HOMER models both conventional and renewable energy technologies.
1.3.5.1. Validation/Testing
Validation results are available upon request.
1.3.5.2. Expertise Required
Basic familiarity with Windows and the technology of small power systems.
1.3.5.3. Users
3000 users in 142 countries. Approximately 1/3 are in the U.S., 1/3 in other OECD countries, and 1/3
in the rest of the world.
1.3.5.4. Audience
System designers, rural electrification program planners, policy, market and technology analysts for
distributed and small power technologies.
1.3.5.5. Input
Load profiles for the application of interest, renewable resource data (although the software makes
some of that available), local installed costs for technology components.
1.3.5.6. Output
HOMER has a huge quantity of output data in tabular and graphic format, including sensitivity
analyses, hourly operational data and comparative economics for competing system architectures.
1.3.5.7. Computer Platform
Windows
1.3.5.8. Programming Language
Visual C++
1.3.5.9. Strengths
Compares different technologies including hybrids. Considers storage. Considers seasonal and daily
variations in loads and resources. Designed as optimization model for sensitivity analyses. Performs dozens
of 8760 hour annual simulations per second. Great graphical outputs.
1.3.5.10. Weaknesses
Does not consider intra-hour variability. Does not consider variations in bus voltage.
