Industrial energy management tool to simplify the task of determining<br />
how much insulation is necessary to use less energy, reduce plant emissions<br />
and improve process efficiency. The 3E Plus insulation thickness computer<br />
program is designed for facility managers, energy/environmental managers,<br />
industrial process engineers, and the industrial industry, the program is a<br />
valuable tool for determining the return on investment of an insulation upgrade<br />
on pipes, ducts, tanks, and boilers.<br />
3E Plus is an integral part of several private sector and government-sponsored energy efficiency<br />
programs. It is featured in the National Insulation Association's (NIA) Insulation Energy Appraisal Program<br />
(IEAP). The IEAP provides detailed instruction on how to use 3E Plus as well as how to perform a complete<br />
energy appraisal on pipes and ducts. The Department of Energy also used 3E Plus to develop its Industrial<br />
Insulation Guidelines.<br />
1.2.1.1. Expertise Required<br />
No training is required to use 3E Plus, but many users do find it helpful to attend a training session<br />
through the National Insulation Association (NIA) which walks users through the program.<br />

Input to 3E Plus is all done through pull down menus or forms in a clearly marked graphical user<br />
interface. To use 3E Plus, be prepared to input specific data about the system being analyzed for an<br />
insulation upgrade, inclu<strong>di</strong>ng base metal type, various process and operating temperatures, wind speed, pipe<br />
sizes, surface geometry, fuel type, annual operation hours and the type of insulation under consideration.<br />
1.2.1.5. Output<br />
3E Plus simplifies the task of determining how much insulation is necessary to use less energy, reduce<br />
plant emissions and improve process efficiency. The program is a valuable tool for determining the return on<br />
investment of an insulation upgrade on pipes, ducts, tanks, and boilers. Output comes in preformatted<br />
reports, and can be exported to spreadsheets designed by NAIMA for further analysis.<br />
