chronologisch verband staan met andere nuclei, terwijl katalysatoren enkel
in chronologisch verband staan met één enkele andere nucleus. Het is inte-
ressant om te zien hoe deze causale relaties door Barthes beschreven worden:
Catalysers are only consecutive units, cardinal functions are both
consecutive and consequential. (52)
Nuclei (as will be seen in a moment) form finite sets grouping
a small number of terms, are governed by a logic, are at once
necessary and sufficient. (52–3)
As for cardinal functions, they are bound together by a relation
of solidarity: a function of this type calls for another function of
the same type and reciprocally. (53)
A sequence is a logical succession of nuclei bound together by a
relation of solidarity (...).
Het onderscheid tussen nuclei en katalysatoren wordt in het eerste citaat
causaal uitgedrukt: kardinale functies hebben een gevolg. Het tweede citaat
loopt vooruit op het sequentieconcept en drukt uit dat nuclei door een zo-
wel voldoende als noodzakelijke logica gestructureerd zijn. De stap naar de
logica lijkt voor de hand liggend, maar voldoet niet om de causaliteit een
basis te geven. De relatie die hier aangestipt wordt, is de later genoemde so-
lidariteitsrelatie die Barthes ontleent aan Louis Hjelmslev. De Encyclopedic
Dictionary of the Sciences of Language (Ducrot & Todorov 1979) noemt als
voorbeeld – van de door Hjelmslev bedoelde relatie – dat een persoonsvorm
nooit zonder tijd en wijs voorkomt (in het Frans). Abstracter uitgedrukt:
A and B are in solidarity with respect to C if one cannot find
in an element of C an element of A without an element of B, and
vice versa. (109)
In het laatste citaat van Barthes zien we het causaliteitsconcept en de soli-
dariteitsrelatie door elkaar lopen. Het woord ‘succession’ wijst op causaliteit
(oorzaken gaan vooraf aan gevolgen) en zowel ‘logical’ als ‘relation of solida-
rity’ wijzen op logica. Het is duidelijk dat in de solidariteitsrelatie een op-
eenvolging van elementen niet noodzakelijkerwijs aanwezig is; zij stelt alleen
