The Dionysian (in short, very reductively<br />

uncurbed, the untamed, the “wild”, the<br />

“primitive”, such as in P. B. Shelley’s<br />

Prometheus, as well as to some degree also<br />

in Mary Shelley’s “modern” gothic<br />

Prometheus, is thus romantic, and can reach<br />

the true and live Apollonian transparence<br />

(order), while the Apollonian (order) without<br />

the Dionysian (disorder) is nonprogressive,<br />

Genius, according to Novalis, contains in<br />

itself the two tendencies – towards order<br />

and towards disorder, the result being illumination,<br />

the perpetual amplification of<br />

freedom. The same fundamental idea seems<br />

to be present in William Blake’s and other<br />

romantics’ systems of thought: without contraries<br />

is no progression – and progression<br />

means lastly perpetual infinite purification,<br />

infinite illumination, and infinite-perpetual<br />

unification with God as Spirit.<br />
