The Dionysian (in short, very reductively
speaking, disorder), in other words, the
uncurbed, the untamed, the “wild”, the
“primitive”, such as in P. B. Shelley’s
Prometheus, as well as to some degree also
in Mary Shelley’s “modern” gothic
Prometheus, is thus romantic, and can reach
the true and live Apollonian transparence
(order), while the Apollonian (order) without
the Dionysian (disorder) is nonprogressive,
imperfectible, and devoid of life.

Genius, according to Novalis, contains in
itself the two tendencies – towards order
and towards disorder, the result being illumination,
the perpetual amplification of
freedom. The same fundamental idea seems
to be present in William Blake’s and other
romantics’ systems of thought: without contraries
is no progression – and progression
means lastly perpetual infinite purification,
infinite illumination, and infinite-perpetual
unification with God as Spirit.
