tribute to underlying data for political decisions throughout the mandate period,
i.e. up to 2014. The second section of this report provides an indepth presentation
of the basis of the budgetary costs for the recommended measures. This is limited
to public expenditure in order to implement the measures. The budgetary cost for
the estimated measures amounts to SEK 640–770 million. These costs are partially
dependent on the level of ambition set by decisionmakers when deciding to implement
a measure. Estimates of the cost of measures in objective domain 2: Economic
and social prerequisites were not possible.
Cost-effectiveness assessment of some of the recommended measures
The Institute conducted an assessment of the costeffectiveness or costsavings of
proposed measures based on published scientific studies. The objective was to provide
the Government economic input for decisions regarding the implementation
of measures. However, there are currently few studies that can be used to assess
the costeffectiveness of the recommended measure proposals, meaning that more
research in the area is needed in the future.
Health and economy
Health is receiving more attention as a means of economic development. From a
societal perspective, better health may increase the potential for productivity and
reduce costs to the actors of society.
Concluding remarks
That presented in this report should be viewed as an endeavour to contribute economic
input to decisions in public health. The work of finding relevant data for this
report has shown that there is a need for more research and continued development
efforts in cooperation between authorities in order to establish common methods
for cost analyses.
