TÜRKİYE-İRAN İLİŞKİLERİNDE YENİ
RÜZGÂRLAR
Kimi çevrelerde dile getirildiğinin aksine,
İran ile varılan nükleer anlaşmadan memnuniyet
duyan ülkelerin başında Türkiye
yer alıyor. Anlaşma ile sağlanan uzlaşmanın,
bölgenin barış ve güvenliğine yapacağı
katkının farkında olan Ankara, Tahran’ın
yeni ekonomisinde kendisiyle ilgili yeni fırsatların
doğacağına inanıyor. Kalıcı anlaşma
sonunda İran’ın petrol ve doğal gaz pazarına
tüm gücüyle dönmesi, Türkiye’nin enerji
the world; and the expectation for
increased demand may create pressure for
decreasing oil prices globally. Second effect
would be seen in the gas industry. Europe
might reduce the amount of natural gas
purchased because Iran would be an alternative
as a country getting on well with the
Western world. Increased oil and natural
gas exports of Iran would revive its economy
with cash flow, and this might motivate
foreign investors for the renewal of energy
infrastructures that are old and outdated.
CRITICAL BARRIERS TO THE AGREEMENT:
NETANYAHU, US CONGRESS AND S-300
MISSILES
Can all these positive developments be considered
as a part of a plan which would run
smoothly? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, who swept an election victory,
forcefully argued against a nuclear deal
with Iran, telling US President Barack
Obama that such a nuclear agreement with
Iran would be a threat for Israel’s survival.
Besides, even though he does not actually
participate in negotiations, he quietly influences
the US Congress via the Jewish lobby.
However, Moscow took the first step to lift
the sanctions against Iran. Russian
President Vladimir Putin eliminated the
barriers to the supply of S-300s to Iran. On
the other hand, there is a complex balance
between the US, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
While supporting Saudi Arabia against
Houthis, President Obama negotiates about
a nuclear agreement with Iran. The details
which would make Iran a nuclear power in
the medium or long term were discussed in
Lausanne whereas Saudi Arabia and its
allies sent troops to Yemen to fight against
Houthis. However, the good news about a
nuclear agreement would still maintain the
conflict and competition till the end of June.
But it will not be surprising to see the ongoing
“nuclear tension” in the upcoming
years.
CHANGES IN TURKISH-IRANIAN RELATIONS
In contrary to popular belief, Turkey is one
of the countries that are pleased about the
nuclear deal with Iran. According to
Turkey, such an agreement will not only
maintain peace and security in Iran, but
also it could unlock huge economic potential
for the country. With the final agreement,
Iran will be back in the oil and natural
gas industry and this would fortify
Turkey’s role as an “energy bridge”
