petrokimya piyasasında ürettiği ucuz ama
kalitesiz ürünlerle tanınan Çin ile rekabette
güçlü bir duruş sergileyebiliyor.
Petkim’in katkısı ile çeşitli ölçeklerde kurulan
plastik firmaları da ham maddelerini
ucuz ve kolay yoldan temin etme imkanı
buluyor. Çünkü Petkim’in ticaret merkezlerine
ve yurtiçi pazara ulaşımı sağlayacak karayolu,
demiryolu gibi büyük altyapı olanaklarına
sahip olması ve özellikle ticarette önemli
bir maliyet kalemi olan lojistik konusunda

the USA in 1950s; it appeared and developed in
West Europe in late 1950s, Japan in 1960s, less
developed and developing countries in 1970s.
In 1951, the number of petrochemical facilities
in the USA was over 90. It means that USA
assumed 25% of world petrochemical production
at that time. Exactly fifty years later in
2001, this number reached to 50%.
Petrochemical industry grew 20-30% in developed
countries between 1950 and 1960. Turkey
closely followed the development process of
petrochemistry throughout the world. Fabrizio
Galié, Consultant from the Independent
Chemical Information Service, mentioned
about the development of the petrochemistry
sector in Turkey and emphasizes the magnitude
of the sector by saying, “the domestic
demand for chemicals, plastic products, rubber,
fibers etc. has been tracking growth rates
above the world average for several years.”
TURKEY ENTERED INTO THE PETROCHEMISTRY
MARKET WITH PETKIM
Founding of Petkim in 1965 was the first move
in Turkey’s petrochemistry quest. Petkim
became operational nearly in the same period
with the petrochemical facilities of developed
countries, and the petrochemistry history
started in Turkey. Since then, the petrochemical
sector became a driving force for industrialization
and development in Turkey. Although
it passed through an unfavorable period when
it was unable to make new capacity investments
in addition to its capacity increase and
modernization investments during the privatization
process, Petkim managed to sustain its
product quality. Today, Turkey can display a
strong stance in the competition with China
which is famous for its cheap but poor-quality
products in the petrochemical sector.
Various plastic firms from small to medium
and large scale enjoyed the cheap and easy
supply of raw materials thanks to Petkim. At
this point, Petkim’s Aliağa choice comes to the
forefront because Aliağa offers multi-alternative
opportunities such as railway, land and sea
routes which will link Petkim to trade centers
and domestic markets. As an important cost
item in trade, logistics became an advantage for
Petkim and its customers. Petkim’s location
has turned into a key factor that increases the
competitive power of Turkish petrochemical
industry.
