AUF DEM HOLZWEG
Das „Splinterbike“ ist ein einzigartiges
Beispiel für bewusste materielle Einschränkung.
Denn dieses Fahrrad besteht
ausschließlich aus Holz (und
Leim). Keine Schraube, kein Nagel, keine
Kette – letztere wurde beispielsweise
durch ein hölzernes Zahnrad ersetzt.
Konstruiert von Michael Thompson, entsprang
die Idee einer Wette. Rund 1.000
Arbeitsstunden steckte er in den Bau.
Nach Fertigstellung fuhr sein Splinterbike
prompt einen Rekord ein, nachdem
Triathlet James Tully im August dieses
Jahres darauf einen Geschwindigkeits-
Weltrekord für reine Holzfahrräder aufstellte:
18,11 km/h.
Constrained writing is the art of writing
a novel or poem within an arbitrary
restriction, such as not using the letter “e”;
Ernest Vincent Wright’s 1939 novel
Gadbsy managed to go 260 pages without
that letter. The Splinterbike could be
described as “constrained engineering”,
since it is constructed entirely out of wood
(and glue), without a metal bolt or spoke in
sight; the chain is replaced by a wooden
cog. Designed and built by Michael
Thompson for a bet, the entire endeavour
took about 1,000 hours. Once completed,
the bike swiftly made its way into the
record books when triathlete James Tully
set a world speed record for 100%
wooden bicycles of 18.11km/h in August
this year. A tad more useful than a book
without the letter “e”, then.
