Es ist leicht zu erkennen, dass der helle Schein der Linse das Publikum vom Geschehen auf der Bühne
ablenken kann. Lichtdesigner würden nun logischerweise einen Top Hat verwenden, um „den Blickwinkel
auf die Linse“ einzuschränken und somit den hellen Schein der Linse vor dem Publikum zu verbergen.

In dieser Situation hat das Hinzufügen eines Full Top Hat nicht das gewünschte Ergebnis erzielt, da die
Innenseite des Full Top Hats immer noch hell erleuchtet zu sehen ist und ist somit für das Publikum aus
dieser Perspektive noch immer potentiell recht störend ist.

Nun ist es leicht zu erkennen, dass durch Verwendung eines Half Top Hat der Source Four fast verschwunden
ist. Wenn Lichtdesigner Scheinwerfer aus der Sicht des Publikums verschwinden lassen möchten,
verwenden sie somit in vielen Fällen einen Half Top Hat anstelle eines Full Top Hat.
It’s easy to see that the bright glow of the lens might be distracting to the audience. Logic would suggest that
the designer might choose to use a top hat to “decrease the viewing angle to the lens,” in other words, to hide
the bright glow of the lens from the audience.
In this situation, did adding a top hat help? Not really, since the inside of the top hat is still glowing brightly,
and is still potentially quite distracting.
Now it is easy to see that by adding a half top hat, the Source Four on the right has nearly disappeared. In
many cases when designers need to make fixtures disappear from audience view, they use half top hats
rather than full top hats.
