UNTERRICHTETMeeting Phil OrtizA Presentation on Literatureand CreativityPhil Ortiz, one of “The Simpsons” cartoonistswho for example invented “SideshowBob” and also some other characters, came to visit the pupils of our seniorclasses for a short interview. For the pupilsit was a more or less amazing event inthe second week of school in 2013.At first, when Mr Ortiz and his friendKlaus Leven, a cartoonist from Bochum, stepped into the library of the EKS, onMonday 14 th January 2013, the pupilswere stunned by meeting one of the artistsfrom the famous American TV series“The Simpsons“. The artist and hiscompanion introduced themselves andloosened the tension with some easy comments. The audience also got to know somethingabout Klaus Leven’s experiences. But back to Phil Ortiz, from a normal“artist”,who once said when getting hischance for success, „Oh man! I‘m gonna‘make the big bucks now!” to a well-knowncartoonist but still not being rich. Theaverage person might ask oneself, how hecame it to this point (?).Well, he said that his passion for drawinghas originally started in kindergarten(since he is an American...) when headored painting things in his colouringbook. Also, when he attended grammarschool he was good at doodling comicstrips which was something special at thistime. He told the audience about how hehad become a drawer of “The Simpsons“and about earlier or later milestones in hiscareer. At the very moment he is reinventinghis definition of new arts cartooningtogether with Klaus Leven, in a projectcalled “Sketchonizing”. It was previouslynamed “Simpsonizing” but later changeddue to copy right conflict prevention.“Sketchonizing” resembles the way “TheSimpsons” are drawn but differs in manydetails from the series. After that they came to show another intentionof their visit: Mr Ortiz and Mr Leventaught a lesson in “Having success!“- especially when it comes to one‘s profession.Klaus Leven expressed the coreof their message for the pupils in two sentences:“Do what you want to do! But putsome effort into it!” Needless to say therewas some time for Mr Ortiz to give autographsincluding two or three personalMeeting Phildrawings by him..In any case it was a niceexperience meeting someone like Mr Ortiz, thankfully granted by Mrs Fliesen.Jered Reinhold, 13. Jg.Be Creative & Original! The American cartoonist Phil Ortiz andhis friend Klaus Leven, an artist fromGermany, visited the Oberstufe of theEKS to promote their new project whichstarts in June.Well, if you think about somebody whoworks for Hollywood, for Disney and allthe famous personalities who do you expect?A well-dressed glamorous man whois smart, really good looking and from talkto you if you get the permission from hismanagement? So, this was my notion ofsomeone who worked for “The Simpsons”.When the man came in all I expectedvanished not only because of hislooks. His hair was grey, he was neitheryoung nor slender anymore, wearing jeansand a Bordeaux-red college jacket with abig Simpsons picture on the back. Thiswas the man who sat now in front of uswaiting for our questions. We greeted eachother in a friendly way and felt well andcomfortable from the first moment on,Kästnerforum 35-12/1324 UNTERRICHTEN
