But nonetheless we, theEnglish Leistungkurs.in year 13 are verythankful and probably someone of usfound a new dream job.Jenny and Paul, 13. Jg.Simpsons‘ Uncle PhilEverybody of you knows the name Homer,Bart or Lisa from the Simpsons. Butwho of you knows which person is behindthese yellow faces with their big eyes andperfect white teeth? On 14 th January thisyear a man named Phil Ortiz was at ourEKS. You don‘t know him? He is justthe person who designed some of thefunniest and most important charactersof the Simpsons. He is the inventor ofNed Flanders, the neighbour of the Simpsonsfamily. He also designed Apu andthe Kwik-E-Mart he works in, Otto thebus driver, Tingle Tangle Bob and a lot ofother funny characters.Mr Ortiz told us a lot about his career, how he started in the comic artist businessand how it has changed today. The firstimpression we got from him was that he isa very friendly, relaxed and funny person. He also wore a very typical American outfit:a college jacket with pictures of Lisa,Bart, Homer and Marge printed on it, andthe typical blue jeans and sneakers.Phil Ortiz has worked as a cartoonist since1987. In this long time he also drew forThe Muppets, Garfield, Scooby Doo andother famous comics and films. It is a veryspecial job Mr Ortiz has but he told usthat if you want to work in a job you loveyou have to work hard and give your bestall the time. Then, nothing is impossibleand you can reach anything. At the end of the meeting he just presentedus how he sketches the figures of theSimpsons with the example of one of ourstudents. It was just amazing to see howhe draws the figure. He began with detailslike drawing the eyes or the nose andcontinued with the.rest like the head, hairand mouth. He sketched a perfect cartoonpart by part.Seda & Seyithan, 13. Jg.Re-invent YourselfOn Monday 14 th January 2013 the Americancartoonist Phil Ortiz visited the Erich-Kästner-Schule. He is known for workingon cartoons like Garfield, The MuppetBabies and He-man. Phil Ortiz won Emmiesfor The Muppet Babies and also forhis work at the Simpsons in the first two2 seasons. Mr Ortiz created characters likeMr Flanders, Otto the bus driver, Nelsonor Apu. One interesting detail is that MrOrtiz was inspired by a real person whoworked as a cashier in a supermarketwhen he invented the character Apu forthe Simpsons. In 1987 he started his career as a cartoonist.Employed by Hannah Barbera hebegan to do his first drawings professionally.Disney made him an offer and sohe changed the Disney Studios and drewillustrations for children’s’ books. Later hewas engaged company making the “TheSimpsons”.During the whole meeting Mr Ortiz toldmany stories about his past, The Simpsonsand even Matt Groening. An interestingfact is that Matt Groening wanted his signatureas a logo on every Simpsons logoand on every character to prove their originalityalthough some of the figures havenot been designed by him. So, he isn’t thereal owner of The Simpsons but his nameis stongly connected with the cartoon ashis logo is on every cartoon. One otherstory Mr Ortiz told the audience was thatthe family of The Simpsons is more orless inspired by Matt Groening’s family. His family members even have almost thesame names as the family of The Simpsonshave. After Mr Ortiz’ speech some of the studentscame up with questions. A studentasked why the skin of The Simpsons is colouredyellow. The answer was a simpleone. When Matt Groening watched TVthe screen got damaged and the colourschanged to yellow. This is how Mr Groeninggot the idea of making a comic withcharacters who have yellow skin.Mr Ortiz’ friend and tour organizer calledKlaus Leven interrupted Mr Ortiz in somesituations and told us about how he becamean artist. Although in bad English hesaid many things which are not completelyunimportant for the students’ future. MrLeven dropped out of school and becamea drum teacher and had his own instrumentstore. Also, he got to know importantpersons in the cartoon business whenhe went to America on a trip. He did knowwhat he wanted to become in his later lifeand was successful. This gave us the ideathat determination and commitment arethe keys to success. All in all, this meeting with Phil Ortizwasn´t only there for us to tell us aboutcartoons or how they are made. It was alsoa valuable lesson for us which taught ushow to reach our.dreams. So we have toset up goals for our future and be ambitious.Philip Martin 13.
