Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: The orig<strong>in</strong>al "beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego is<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stant we believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from<br />
God. The "new beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g" is <strong>the</strong> holy <strong>in</strong>stant <strong>in</strong><br />
which we realize our mistake and choose to identify<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. An important<br />
<strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> this chapter and throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> is<br />
<strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d to choose.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: We beg<strong>in</strong> aga<strong>in</strong> by look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement. The At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple is <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit's Answer to <strong>the</strong> ego's separati<strong>on</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple.<br />
•<br />
When we choose to identify with our special egoself,<br />
we are choos<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st our true Self.<br />
•<br />
Choos<strong>in</strong>g to identify with <strong>the</strong> ego has no affect <strong>on</strong><br />
reality, but does affect our experience <strong>of</strong> ourselves as<br />
we lose awareness <strong>of</strong> God's love.<br />
•<br />
Noth<strong>in</strong>g exists separate from God. God knows<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> an ego separate from Him because<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g separate from Him exists. God is perfect,<br />
eternal <strong>on</strong>eness.<br />
•<br />
Our Identity as Christ is eternally unchanged,<br />
regardless <strong>of</strong> our experience <strong>of</strong> ourselves as separate<br />
egos.<br />
•<br />
Idols are anyth<strong>in</strong>g we use to attempt to take <strong>the</strong> place<br />
<strong>of</strong> God's love and wholeness, and re<strong>in</strong>force our<br />
separate special existence. In <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong><br />
we chose to be a t<strong>in</strong>y little fragment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite<br />
wholeness <strong>of</strong> God's K<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />
•<br />
Our temptati<strong>on</strong> is to identify with <strong>the</strong> special<br />
separate ego ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. As we turn<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world shifts<br />
from specialness to forgiveness which facilitates <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement.<br />
•<br />
Forgiveness and At<strong>on</strong>ement are <strong>the</strong> symbols we each<br />
can understand. We can <strong>on</strong>ly get home toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Forgiveness and At<strong>on</strong>ement are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, and<br />
have noth<strong>in</strong>g to do with behavior or communicati<strong>on</strong><br />
between people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
•<br />
The ego's purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is to form special<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships with people who can meet our needs,<br />
fulfill our desires and keep us identified with and<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong> body. The Holy Spirit's purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world is to use our special relati<strong>on</strong>ships as a<br />
classroom to learn forgiveness and to facilitate <strong>the</strong><br />
acceptance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement for ourselves so we<br />
will remember our true Identity as Christ <strong>in</strong> Spirit,<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God.<br />
•<br />
The secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> this chapter entitled "Rules for<br />
Decisi<strong>on</strong>" is a practical guide that is given to<br />
facilitate our choice for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego <strong>in</strong> our daily lives. Once we realize our<br />
mistake <strong>of</strong> choos<strong>in</strong>g to identify with <strong>the</strong> ego, we<br />
have made <strong>the</strong> "new beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g" <strong>in</strong> our lives, and <strong>the</strong><br />
rules for decisi<strong>on</strong> help us c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> path back<br />
Home with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit as our teacher.<br />
•<br />
There are seven rules for decisi<strong>on</strong> that are all really<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e; throughout <strong>the</strong> day we actively choose to<br />
be guided by <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
Our first mistake is that generally we determ<strong>in</strong>e what<br />
our problem is and <strong>the</strong>n ask God for help <strong>in</strong><br />
resolv<strong>in</strong>g it. "Please help me get a job; cure my<br />
cancer; or f<strong>in</strong>d a partner."<br />
•<br />
Once we choose for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />
our special relati<strong>on</strong>ships shifts to forgiveness and<br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement; from blame, c<strong>on</strong>flict, specialness and<br />
separati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
As we see our bro<strong>the</strong>rs with <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit's forgiveness, we beg<strong>in</strong> to see ourselves with<br />
<strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's forgiveness. As our<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r's are forgiven we realize <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> our<br />
<strong>on</strong>eness through forgiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
The ego tells us we can be complete by jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r egos outside <strong>of</strong> ourselves. The Holy Spirit tells<br />
us we can be complete by remember<strong>in</strong>g our <strong>on</strong>eness<br />
with God with<strong>in</strong> ourselves (<strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d).<br />
•<br />
With <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit we observe <strong>the</strong> ego<br />
<strong>in</strong> acti<strong>on</strong>, and learn to choose forgiveness <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong><br />
blame and guilt.<br />
•<br />
True forgiveness sees no s<strong>in</strong> and no separati<strong>on</strong> at all.
