anyth<strong>in</strong>g that protects <strong>the</strong> ego-self is defended. I will<br />
scream and yell if my ego-self protecti<strong>on</strong> is<br />
threatened. Any teach<strong>in</strong>g that threatens our<br />
specialness and <strong>in</strong>dividuality we will fight aga<strong>in</strong>st —<br />
all <strong>of</strong> this is born <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement.<br />
Children do not know what is good for <strong>the</strong>m, nor do<br />
we. Cl<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> ego-self is hurt<strong>in</strong>g us, not<br />
help<strong>in</strong>g. The Holy Spirit's <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement will<br />
help us, but be<strong>in</strong>g like children we scream and yell<br />
when our beloved toys are threatened!<br />

We all are try<strong>in</strong>g to get God to pay attenti<strong>on</strong> to us.<br />
This is why <strong>the</strong> ego wrote <strong>the</strong> Bible. In <strong>the</strong> Bible,<br />
God pays attenti<strong>on</strong> to us: He creates us; He loves us;<br />
He hates us; He murders us; He saves us. Each<br />
<strong>in</strong>terventi<strong>on</strong> proves God recognizes us. From <strong>the</strong><br />
ego's po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, it does not matter if God loves us<br />
or hates us, saves us or destroys us — as l<strong>on</strong>g as He<br />
notices us.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, God does not know about <strong>in</strong>dividuals.<br />
This is not terrible, this is joyful. God's not know<strong>in</strong>g<br />
us is an expressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple — <strong>the</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> never happened. Because <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />
never happened, God cannot know a separate ego.<br />
And strictly speak<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> ego knows noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />
spirit. The ego's real threat is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker<br />
or <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God who has <strong>the</strong> power to withdraw his<br />
belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's existence, and <strong>the</strong> ego would<br />
disappear back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>gness from which it<br />
came.<br />
•<br />
Spirit has no "enemy." The ego is terrified <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />
will withdraw his belief <strong>in</strong> it. Existence is specificity.<br />
The ego <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> "reward" <strong>of</strong> special separate<br />
existence. The ego's god <strong>of</strong>fers eternal life — if you<br />
are good and do what he tells you! Or punishment <strong>in</strong><br />
hell if you do not do as <strong>the</strong> ego's god tells you.<br />
Everybody's ego god is different <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> good<br />
and evil.<br />
Spirit <strong>of</strong>fers permanent, unshakable Be<strong>in</strong>g. The ego<br />
does not want permanent, unshakable Be<strong>in</strong>g because<br />
it does not exist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-specific, abstract <strong>on</strong>eness<br />
<strong>of</strong> eternal Be<strong>in</strong>g. Egos exists <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>. Loss<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual existence is <strong>the</strong> ego's terror.<br />
The <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>of</strong> God's love is covered over first by<br />
<strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, and sec<strong>on</strong>d by<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g a body and world <strong>on</strong>to which it projects its<br />
s<strong>in</strong> and guilt out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d and <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> body and<br />

world it made. Once we are identified as a body <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> world, we are m<strong>in</strong>dless, unaware <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d's<br />
power to choose, and unaware <strong>of</strong> our real identity as<br />
God's S<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Your belief <strong>in</strong> darkness is why <strong>the</strong> light cannot enter.<br />
Belief is <strong>the</strong> key word. The light is <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d that is first covered by <strong>the</strong><br />
darkness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />
and fear; and <strong>the</strong>n veiled by mak<strong>in</strong>g a body and<br />
world <strong>on</strong>to which we project <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt. Once<br />
we believe that s<strong>in</strong> and guilt are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, <strong>the</strong><br />
source <strong>of</strong> our problem (belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
m<strong>in</strong>d) is forgotten and veiled by <strong>the</strong> body and world.<br />
•<br />
In <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> God's love <strong>the</strong> ego ceases to exist.<br />
"God has given us everyth<strong>in</strong>g" is a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> abundance, c<strong>on</strong>trasted with <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
scarcity. The absence <strong>of</strong> God's abundance is <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
scarcity and lack which <strong>the</strong> ego tries to compensate<br />
for by <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g us "special" love to make up for<br />
God's unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al love we have chosen aga<strong>in</strong>st —<br />
special relati<strong>on</strong>ships are covered <strong>in</strong> later chapters.<br />
•<br />
The primary motivati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego is to keep us<br />
m<strong>in</strong>dless which preserves its separate identity. The<br />
ego tells us it wants us to be happy, that we can <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
be happy as an <strong>in</strong>dividual and hav<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
"specialness" needs met. It does not tell us <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
way we can be truly happy is to choose <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The ego's thought system and <strong>the</strong><br />
body and world it made have <strong>on</strong>e purpose — to<br />
preserve <strong>the</strong> ego's special separate existence.<br />
Sane judgment is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right m<strong>in</strong>d with <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit who represents <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. The ego<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ceals <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement under <strong>the</strong> thought system <strong>of</strong><br />
s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, and <strong>the</strong>n by mak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
body and world <strong>on</strong>to which it projects <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />
and fear, <strong>the</strong>reby preserv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
The ego's goal is to keep away <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. To<br />
ensure we never realize our mistake <strong>of</strong> choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
ego ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> ego develops a<br />
strategy. The strategy arose from <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciple and <strong>the</strong> ego's fear <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. The<br />
strategy is to make us m<strong>in</strong>dless by mak<strong>in</strong>g a world<br />
and a body and hav<strong>in</strong>g us identify with it. The ego<br />
first makes us fear <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d by mak<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and<br />
fear real and tell<strong>in</strong>g us God will punish us for our s<strong>in</strong><br />
which motivates us to leave <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d and hide <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
body and world. The ego <strong>the</strong>n projects <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and
