Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: This chapter glorifies <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>of</strong><br />
God and Heaven, and our <strong>on</strong>eness with God, <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit, Jesus and all our bro<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
•<br />
Our true reality is <strong>in</strong> our Identity with God. This is<br />
<strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple to which we are<br />
asked to br<strong>in</strong>g our dark thoughts <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, s<strong>in</strong><br />
and guilt.<br />
•<br />
Our functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Heaven is to create which is to<br />
extend God's love. And our functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is<br />
to forgive and heal. In <strong>the</strong> world we are to turn to<br />
Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit for guidance and support.<br />
•<br />
In our deluded m<strong>in</strong>d we are able to believe that we<br />
can be outside <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> love, but believ<strong>in</strong>g does not<br />
make it true. It is with<strong>in</strong> our power to deny <strong>the</strong> love<br />
<strong>of</strong> God, or choose aga<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and God's<br />
love and wholeness.<br />
•<br />
Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g God <strong>in</strong> ourselves and <strong>in</strong> our bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
forms <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> forgiveness. Forgiveness<br />
facilitates <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness by help<strong>in</strong>g us to<br />
see God <strong>in</strong> ourselves and our bro<strong>the</strong>rs. The<br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple is stated here — <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God and His Creati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
We jo<strong>in</strong> with our bro<strong>the</strong>rs through forgiveness and<br />
realiz<strong>in</strong>g our shared <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> return<strong>in</strong>g Home<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r. This is a rem<strong>in</strong>der that our strength is <strong>in</strong> our<br />
<strong>on</strong>eness with God, and our weakness is <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />
from God. When we choose <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit as our<br />
teacher we experience peace and joy, when we<br />
choose <strong>the</strong> ego as our teacher we experience c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
and pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />
•<br />
The story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prodigal S<strong>on</strong> represents <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong><br />
our decisi<strong>on</strong> to separate from God, our experience <strong>of</strong><br />
s<strong>in</strong> and guilt for choos<strong>in</strong>g to be separate from Him,<br />
and our fear <strong>of</strong> return<strong>in</strong>g Home. This story illustrates<br />
a major <strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> which is <strong>the</strong> experience<br />
<strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d which leads us to<br />
make <strong>the</strong> world <strong>on</strong>to which we project our s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />
and fear. But <strong>in</strong> truth ideas leave not <strong>the</strong>re source<br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r we identify with <strong>the</strong> ego's s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear,<br />
or with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and God's love, our<br />
projecti<strong>on</strong>s and creati<strong>on</strong>s stay with us — <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
separati<strong>on</strong>. The ego leads us to believe that ideas do<br />
leave <strong>the</strong>ir source and <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is real.<br />
CHAPTER EIGHT<br />
THE JOURNEY BACK<br />
30<br />
•<br />
The "c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s" <strong>of</strong> truth are peace and forgiveness,<br />
and as we repeatedly turn to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />
throughout our day we are reawakened to <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong><br />
our <strong>on</strong>eness with God. Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit are<br />
symbols that represent guides who help us remember<br />
our Identity as God's S<strong>on</strong>, and overcome our fear <strong>of</strong><br />
loss <strong>of</strong> our separate egoic identity.<br />
•<br />
Knowledge is <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>on</strong>ym for love, truth, reality<br />
and Heaven. Our motivati<strong>on</strong> for learn<strong>in</strong>g this course<br />
is <strong>the</strong> peace that comes when we are free <strong>of</strong> all<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict and pa<strong>in</strong>. The root <strong>of</strong> all c<strong>on</strong>flict and pa<strong>in</strong> is<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego's c<strong>on</strong>flict with God. When we have true Self<br />
Knowledge our c<strong>on</strong>flict and pa<strong>in</strong> is released and we<br />
experience our natural state <strong>of</strong> peace. In our world <strong>of</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict, peace comes through forgiveness. We are<br />
afraid <strong>of</strong> Self Knowledge, forgiveness and peace<br />
because we are terrified <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> our special,<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent existence — which can <strong>on</strong>ly exist <strong>in</strong> self<br />
ignorance, blame and c<strong>on</strong>flict. When we choose to<br />
turn to Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit <strong>the</strong>y help us<br />
overcome our fear, and experience <strong>the</strong> love and<br />
peace <strong>of</strong> God. Forgiveness <strong>of</strong> those with whom we<br />
believe we are <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict facilitates <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
our <strong>on</strong>eness with God and our experience <strong>of</strong> peace.<br />
•<br />
It is <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker <strong>in</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d that has<br />
freedom <strong>of</strong> choice, and can decide to lay aside <strong>the</strong><br />
ego. And that is <strong>the</strong> ego's fear.<br />
•<br />
The ego uses <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to establish its<br />
existence, and <strong>the</strong>n strives to keep us out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
decisi<strong>on</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d by hav<strong>in</strong>g us<br />
identify with <strong>the</strong> body. The ego believes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power<br />
<strong>of</strong> attack because it believes its attack <strong>on</strong> God gave it<br />
separate existence. We <strong>the</strong>n attacked <strong>the</strong> Voice for<br />
God by reject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that does not recognize our <strong>in</strong>dividuality,<br />
and we chose to make a body and identify with it and<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. And as <strong>the</strong> body<br />
we attack every o<strong>the</strong>r body (humans, animals, germs<br />
etc.) that threatens our separate existence as bodies.<br />
Sickness is divided purpose; we are divided with<strong>in</strong><br />
ourselves. In sickness, m<strong>in</strong>ds and bodies are seen as<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g separate <strong>in</strong>terests. Heal<strong>in</strong>g is unified purpose;<br />
we are unified with<strong>in</strong> ourselves. In heal<strong>in</strong>g, m<strong>in</strong>ds<br />
and bodies are seen as hav<strong>in</strong>g shared <strong>in</strong>terests. The<br />
ego's purpose is attack and m<strong>in</strong>dlessness. The Holy
