From <strong>the</strong> Preface <strong>of</strong> A <strong>Course</strong> <strong>in</strong> Miracles<br />

●<br />

What It Says<br />

Noth<strong>in</strong>g real can be threatened.<br />

Noth<strong>in</strong>g unreal exists.<br />

Here<strong>in</strong> lies <strong>the</strong> peace <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

This is how A <strong>Course</strong> <strong>in</strong> Miracles beg<strong>in</strong>s. It makes a fundamental dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> between <strong>the</strong> real<br />

and <strong>the</strong> unreal; between knowledge and percepti<strong>on</strong>. Knowledge is truth, under <strong>on</strong>e law, <strong>the</strong> law<br />

<strong>of</strong> love or God. Truth is unalterable, eternal and unambiguous. It can be unrecognized, but it<br />

cannot be changed. It applies to everyth<strong>in</strong>g that God created, and <strong>on</strong>ly what He created is real. It<br />

is bey<strong>on</strong>d learn<strong>in</strong>g because it is bey<strong>on</strong>d time and process. It has no opposite; no beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and no<br />

end. It merely is.<br />

The world <strong>of</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, is <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> time, <strong>of</strong> change, <strong>of</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

end<strong>in</strong>gs. It is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>, not <strong>on</strong> facts. It is <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> birth and death, founded <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> scarcity, loss, separati<strong>on</strong> and death. It is learned ra<strong>the</strong>r than given, selective <strong>in</strong> its<br />

perceptual emphases, unstable <strong>in</strong> its functi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>accurate <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

From knowledge and percepti<strong>on</strong> respectively, two dist<strong>in</strong>ct thought systems arise which are<br />

opposite <strong>in</strong> every respect. In <strong>the</strong> realm <strong>of</strong> knowledge no thoughts exist apart from God, because<br />

God and His Creati<strong>on</strong> share <strong>on</strong>e Will. The world <strong>of</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong>, however, is made by <strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong><br />

opposites and separate wills, <strong>in</strong> perpetual c<strong>on</strong>flict with each o<strong>the</strong>r and with God. What percepti<strong>on</strong><br />

sees and hears appears to be real because it permits <strong>in</strong>to awareness <strong>on</strong>ly what c<strong>on</strong>forms to <strong>the</strong><br />

wishes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> perceiver. This leads to a world <strong>of</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong>s, a world which needs c<strong>on</strong>stant defense<br />

precisely because it is not real.<br />

When you have been caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong> you are caught <strong>in</strong> a dream. You cannot<br />

escape without help, because everyth<strong>in</strong>g your senses show merely witnesses to <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dream. God has provided <strong>the</strong> Answer, <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly Way out, <strong>the</strong> true Helper. It is <strong>the</strong> functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> His<br />

Voice, His Holy Spirit, to mediate between <strong>the</strong> two worlds. He can do this because, while <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong>e hand He knows <strong>the</strong> truth, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r He also recognizes our illusi<strong>on</strong>s, but without believ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. It is <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's goal to help us escape from <strong>the</strong> dream world by teach<strong>in</strong>g us how to<br />

reverse our th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and unlearn our mistakes. Forgiveness is <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's great learn<strong>in</strong>g aid<br />

<strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g this thought reversal about. However, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> has its own def<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> what<br />

forgiveness really is just as it def<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> its own way.<br />

The world we see merely reflects our own <strong>in</strong>ternal frame <strong>of</strong> reference – <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant ideas,<br />

wishes and emoti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>ds. "Projecti<strong>on</strong> makes percepti<strong>on</strong>" (<strong>Text</strong> p. 445). We look <strong>in</strong>side<br />

first, decide <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> world we want to see and <strong>the</strong>n project that world outside, mak<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>the</strong><br />

truth as we see it. We make it true by our <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> what it is we are see<strong>in</strong>g. If we are<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g percepti<strong>on</strong> to justify our own mistakes – our anger, our impulses to attack, our lack <strong>of</strong> love<br />

<strong>in</strong> whatever form it may take – we will see a world <strong>of</strong> evil, destructi<strong>on</strong>, malice, envy and despair.<br />

All this we must learn to forgive, not because we are be<strong>in</strong>g "good" and "charitable," but because<br />

what we are see<strong>in</strong>g is not true. We have distorted <strong>the</strong> world by our twisted defenses, and are<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore see<strong>in</strong>g what is not <strong>the</strong>re. As we learn to recognize our perceptual errors, we also learn
